Absurd Bird saves the day. A divine visit to the organic fried chicken joint, in Spitalfields, London.

So I found out a few months ago I had this crazy allergy to chicken and eggs. Long story short, something injected into the birds seems to be upsetting my system causing me to have a mild anaphylactic reaction when I eat it. I later found out it appears to be due to my stress levels, I am producing too much cortisol, and it has made me allergic to the most accessible food to find and eat on the planet. 😢

Regardless, for the last few months, I have been pining for takeaway or restaurant chicken. When it’s not by choice, having to stop eating your favourite food can be a bit depressing, time-consuming and also expensive. The average price for Organic free-range chicken for one is about £6.

When you are in a household of regular chicken eaters, and then there is me who has to splurge out on the diamond class of poultry, it makes dinner time a bit chaotic. Separate pans, spoons, and so forth. I just want to run to KFC and get some lovely fried chicken and not have to spend more time making my own with organic chicken AND Eggs.

Anyhoo!

Finding an organic chicken place in my area has been a chore. Unfortunately, Weybridge and surrounding areas are lacking with these food establishments. So I had to venture out to London to find somewhere I could put my feet up and eat something made for me.

After a group discussion with the minis, we decided to take the almost 2-hour journey to Aldgate East and visited Absurd Bird on Commercial Street in London. It was worth the train journey from hell, lol. We happened to board the one train with no air conditioning on one of the hottest days in London. HAHA. However, as I said it was so worth it.

We were greeted with the big beaming smile of Raul who gave us the choice of where we were to sit in this eclectically decorated, a taste of the south atmospheric restaurant.

I was so excited about tucking into the offerings but still had doubting nerves that it would all be a fluke. I asked again, this IS all organic chicken, right? However, he confirmed this and I was so pleased. Not only could I get chicken, but I also wanted to munch on those beautiful waffles I had been craving for weeks.

Their menu was quite overwhelming, but all sounded delicious. So much on offer. That day they had introduced a NEW menu. My daughter (19) and I went for the two cocktails deal, Porn Star Martinis. Cheers, let the dining begin!

On offer, we had a choice of fried chicken, buffalo wings, chicken tenders, whole roasted chicken, chips, sweet potatoes, wraps, mac and cheese, cornbread. The list goes on. As a former resident of The United States, I was impressed by the choices. It didn't feel like I was in the UK at that moment in time.

My son tends to order EVERYTHING on a menu, so I had to limit his choices. Although the thought of every piece of chicken available was appealing. As there were 4 of us, we made a varied selection for us to all dab into.

We chose:

  • Fried chicken tenders

  • Chicken Caesar Wrap

  • Sweet potato fries

  • Mac and Cheese

  • Chicken Caesar Salad

  • Crispy Fried Buttermilk Wings

  • Buffalo Chicken Wings

  • Fries

Wow! Wow! Wow!

Now I don't know if it was "wow" because I finally felt safe eating chicken outside of the house or the fact that the food was served entirely fresh and hot and was extremely delicious. The flavours were phenomenal. Though Absurd Bird has a few restaurants around the UK, it didn't taste like a typical chain restaurant meal, with the food tasting staple and bland. This stuff was bloody tasty as..., finger licking, awesome, OMG goodness. The organic chicken was succulent, the mac and cheese passed the test, I was over the moon! Did I mention I could have the mayo? Hurray! As it was made from organic eggs, I was allowed to devour ketchup’s beautiful wife.

We sat for a while, chowing down on everything in front of us and admiring the cosy atmosphere and the trendy music in the background. The kids (9, 12) were so comfortable, which was great. The big tables meant they could sit freely and with Raul’s superb hospitality, the meal was very relaxed as a family gathering. There were lots of messy mouths and big smiles and full stomachs around the table.

We had another round of drinks, and on to the pudding orders!

  • Peanut Butter Cheesecake

  • Waffles, Ice cream, Caramel

  • Cookies

  • Mixed Berry Waffles (deconstructed) I am not too fond of wet food! Though I had an accompanying glass of bubbles!

The waffles were good, a bit dense but still close enough to what I remember as a child in New Jersey at one of the many diners on the highway. The peanut butter cheesecake looked spectacular and went down a treat. The little ones plowed their way through the ice creams and cookies; everyone was in a mellow sweet mental zone! Eight thumbs up from the King Family!

Our bill came out to just over £100, not too bad considering two rounds of 2 cocktails, a meal for four, and lots of puddings.

As great as the meal was, the travel to Aldgate East is a bit of a stretch, both in public transport or by car! Please answer my prayers AB, open one near us!

If you are in the areas of Spitalfields, Soho, Bath, Exeter, Leeds or Glasgow; I most definitely recommend a visit, even if you don't have a chicken allergy, the food is terrific, the staff are fun and super helpful, and the atmosphere and buzz of the restaurant is excellent for singles, couples, and families!
