January 18th was my 42nd birthday. Quite a special one as this year I have gained another 8 or so people in my family. So, more to celebrate with AND a few old familiar faces were able to celebrate the weekend with me.

Can't have a birthday without a cake, right? Well, I had been on the hunt for somewhere to get a cake. To be honest, I was tired of the supermarket type cakes. With a lot of birthdays in December I couldn't face another overly sugared round tower of "processed" celebration in a box.
Then I discovered Bakerdays.com a cake delivery service that provides personalised occasions cakes delivered to your door. This type of service works for me at the moment as I sometimes have challenges getting over to the supermarket and do most of my shopping online.

The cakes are made with premium quality ingredients. They offer gluten, wheat free and dairy free options. They have thousands of designs to work with. I chose a design that was listed but added a bit of "me" to it. ( can you take a wild guess?!) I suggest you ask for a proof of your design to make sure it is exactly what you want as with important items arriving by post or delivery for a set date, anything can happen!
They offer a next day service if ordered by 2pm on a weekday. You can also ask for a specific day for your cake to arrive. I ordered mine a few days or so before I actually needed it.
The styles of cake range from cupcakes to large cakes with 55 portions. I received a letterbox cake. By letterbox, this cake is meant to be able to fit through the door! I have an odd sized letterbox thingy so the postperson still rang the door bell!

The packaging is secure and designed that if you do have a normal letter box, it can go through the door and not be damaged. I would probably suggest that Bakerdays have discreet boxes, in case the recipient lives in the same home and it is a surprise. But the idea is great, come home and find your sweet treat at your feet.
Taste. The letterbox cake flavour option is a bit limited, so I had to have the vanilla. The cake itself was quite moist. I love icing but not too much. I think it had a good ratio, of icing to cake. It is a single layer cake, the letter box doesn't have the jam and buttercream option, so a small slice is just about right without getting a sugar rush.

A special thank you to Adam, who made sure I was a happy "birthday" girl!
